Empowering Feminist Leadership in Working Peoples’ Coalition

Introduction

The Women in Working Peoples’ Coalition (WPC) aims to foster feminist leadership within organisations dedicated to supporting informal and unorganised labour in India. pervasive influence of patriarchy and the systemic insensitivity of those in positions of power. To address this issue, a focused in-person meeting is proposed in Mumbai, possibly in October. This concept note outlines the key agenda items and objectives of the meeting.

Agenda

1. Identifying Issues Faced by Women Leaders

The meeting will initiate discussions to identify and address the specific challenges faced by women leaders who run organisations dedicated to informal and unorganised labour. By understanding and acknowledging these issues, the network can devise strategies to empower women leaders effectively.

2. Enhancing Visibility of Women’s Work

A crucial aspect of the meeting is to explore ways to enhance the visibility and recognition of the significant contributions made by women leaders within organisations supporting informal and unorganised labour. This will involve promoting gender-inclusive practices and equitable representation.

3. Exploring Feminist Perspective Leadership

The concept of feminist leadership will be at the core of the meeting’s discussions. Participants will delve into feminist principles and perspectives to redefine leadership norms, fostering a more inclusive, collaborative, and empowering approach.

4. Addressing Cultural Patriarchy

Internalised cultural norms and patriarchal beliefs can create obstacles for women in leadership positions. The meeting will address these cultural challenges and work towards dismantling such barriers within organisations and the wider labour movement.

5. Funding and Cross-Movement Dialogue

Ensuring a diverse representation of women leaders from different geographical locations and multiple sectors requires cross-movement dialogue. This dialogue will also play a pivotal role in securing necessary funding for the meeting and making it accessible to participants from various backgrounds.

6. Building Campaigns

The meeting will provide a platform for brainstorming and strategizing campaigns that focus on advancing the rights and well-being of women in leadership roles within organisations supporting informal and unorganised labour. These campaigns will seek to bring about positive change in the labour movement and society.
